UPDATE: Maryland Transportation Authority Police reports that charges are pending in this crash that took the life of Randy Drake Thrower, indicating that police have determined he was not driving the sedan that slammed into the back of a truck on the Bay Bridge on April 2, 2016.  Those adults who accept a ride with an impaired driver simply buy a ticket to their own funeral.  This is yet another case of a group of adults taking their party on the road without any regard for the lives of others or, for that matter, for their own lives.  This crash was NOT an accident but a predictable outcome of choices made by adults.  First Sgt. Jonathan Green of the Maryland Transportation Police reports that the names of those persons in the sedan will not be released until they have all been interviewed, as they are considered witnesses.  The two occupants of the sedan who were taken by ambulance to Anne Arundel Medical Center were released after treatment.  OBITUARY

Stevensville, Md. –  Maryland Transportation Authority Police reports that a twenty-one-year-old Queenstown, Md., man was killed when a sedan in which he was either the driver or a passenger crashed into the rear a truck on the eastbound span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, just after the magic 2:00 am killing hour of bar closings in the Annapolis area.  Annapolis is located on the Western Shore of the Bay while Randy Drake Thrower, 21, is from the Eastern Shore, the direction in which the fatal crash occurred.

A police spokesman said that drugs, alcohol ,and speed were all factors in the crash, which fortunately did not injure the driver of the truck — only the party crowd in the sedan.

Thrower, who lived at 200 Somerset Court in Queenstown, Md., was cited by Maryland State Police Trooper D. A. Pope on Nov. 3, 2015, at 4:54 pm on Rt. 50 while westbound at Castle Marina and ticketed for driving at 73 mph in a posted 55 mph zone. Thrower entered a guilty plea in District Court for Queen Anne’s County on Jan. 5, 2016 and was fined $64.50.

Thrower was charged with two counts of driving while his license was suspended on Aug. 7, 2015, by Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Deputy Martz while operating a 2009 Mustang while southbound on Rt. 301 at Del Rhodes Ave. in Queenstown, Md.  Queen Anne’s County States Attorney Lance Richardson dropped both of the charges on Oct. 8, 2015.

Maryland State Police Trooper Landis charged with Thrower with multiple counts of driving while suspended and speeding at more than twenty mph over the limit on July 2, 2015, while southbound on Rt. 10 at Furnace Branch Road in Anne Arundel County, Md.  Anne Arundel County States Attorney Wes Adams dropped all of the charges on Sept. 18, 2015.

Thrower was ticketed for speeding on Rt. 405 west of Rt. 301 on Oct. 22, 2013, by a Maryland trooper and he entered a guilty plea in Queen Anne’s County District Court on March 14, 2014, and was fined $90.

A speeding ticket on July 8, 2013, awarded to Thrower on Rt. 301 for traveling at 74 mph in a 55 mph zone resulted in a fine of $90 in Queen Anne’s County District Court.

On June 4, 2013, Thrower was cited in Talbot County by Pfc. Merrick for underage possession of alcohol; the charge was fined $195 and put on probation.  A drug charge of the same date for less than 10 grams of pot was dropped by Talbot County States Attorney Scott Patterson.

With numerous charges for driving while suspended dropped by prosecutors, Thrower’s luck ran out on Aug. 9, 2012, at 1:15 am when he was cited by Queen Anne’s County Deputy C. Ahern.  In District Court for Queen Anne’s County on April 12, 2013, Thrower was found guilty and fined $150.

From The Baltimore Sun:

A 21-year-old man from Queen Anne’s County was killed in a crash on the Bay Bridge early Saturday, police said.

A 2011 Mazda sedan and a 2014 Freightliner box truck collided on the eastbound side of the Bay Bridge in Queen Anne’s County at 2:22 a.m. Saturday, according to 1st Sgt. Jonathan Green, a spokesman for the Maryland Transportation Authority police.

Two men and two women, all over 18, were inside the Mazda, he said.

One of them, Randy Drake Thrower, 21, of Queenstown, was pronounced dead at the scene, Green said. A woman with serious injuries was flown by state police helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. She was in stable condition, Green said.

Two others were driven by ambulance to Anne Arundel Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the box truck was not injured.   MORE

MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee firefighter accused of driving drunk and causing a deadly crash has been released from jail.

We’re told the man had been tailgating at Miller Park hours before the crash in West Allis that killed two people.

The 31-year-old was arrested two days ago, and released Friday. He has not yet been charged in the crash.

This wouldn’t be the first time this firefighter has faced alcohol-related charges, but they are the most serious.  In a criminal complaint from 2014, the man allegedly behind the wheel Monday night was under the influence when he was shooting a gun at a campground in northern Wisconsin two years ago.

It happened in Langlade County. He tells the investigating officer in the complaint that he consumed a six pack and had some Jim Beam and that he shot his pistol because” It makes me feel better.”   …MORE

From Modesto Bee

04/13/2016 — The Modesto driver in a Sacramento County crash Saturday afternoon that killed her and her four passengers and injured four people in another vehicle was facing felony charges of driving under the influence and cruelty to a child. The charges stemmed from a Sept. 12 collision, Stanislaus Superior Court records show.

In that incident, Annalicia Mona Montoya, 21, committed a felony by willfully putting her 3-year-old daughter, Adelayanna Ortiz, “in a situation where her person or health was endangered and willfully caused or permitted the person or health of said child to be injured,” a criminal complaint filed by the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office states.

Adelayanna was one of the others killed in Saturday’s crash on Highway 12 near Rio Vista in southern Sacramento County. The others who died were Aaliyah Buenrostro, 17; Denise Garcia, 19; and Garcia’s son, Ramiro, 2. All lived in Modesto.

Little information about the Sept. 12 crash was available in the criminal complaint. In addition to child cruelty, Montoya was charged with felony driving under the influence of alcohol and causing injury and felony DUI with blood-alcohol content of 0.08 percent or above and causing injury. Both counts state that the person injured was Jerry Castro Manzano.   …MORE

Modesto, California – Stanislaus County District Attorney Birgit Fladager announced that Kenneth Hughes, 34, of Oakdale, was convicted on October 15th, 2015 of felony drunk driving causing serious bodily injury. Hughes entered a plea to the charges before Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge Nancy Ashley. On Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at about 7:32 a.m., Hughes made an illegal left turn into another car as he was driving eastbound on Milnes Road at Langworth Road in Stanislaus County. The impact left the other driver hospitalized with serious injuries. When questioned by the Highway Patrol, Mr. Hughes agreed that he was “hammered.” A blood test showed Mr. Hughes’ alcohol level to be .19%, over twice the legal limit. Immediately upon his conviction Judge Ashley sentenced Hughes to 4 years and 4 months imprisonment and ordered him to pay restitution to the victim. This case was prosecuted by Deputy District Anthony Colacito working under a grant funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Deadhead Ben Beary’s Party Went On The Road and Killed Three People

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa State Patrol (ISP) has completed an extensive investigation surrounding the circumstances into the four person vehicle fatality crash that occurred on I-80 near the Waukee exit in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 26, 2016. The driver of the Ford Taurus, Benjamin E. Beary, 25, Knoxville was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-80 when his vehicle collided head-on with a Des Moines Police Department transport SUV at approximately 12:32 a.m.

The Iowa State Patrol reported the following:

Based on the investigation of the scene and an examination of the vehicles, the investigators made the following findings about the crash.

– The Ford Taurus, driven by Beary was traveling at a speed of approximately 102 mph at the time of impact.

– The Des Moines Police unit was traveling at a speed of approximately 79 mph at the time of impact.

– Speed zone for this particular area of the interstate is 70 mph.

– Iowa State Patrol Technical Investigators determined that at the time of the crash, there was no braking by either vehicle.  The crash occurred just beyond the crest of a small incline and is the investigators’ conclusion that the Des Moines officers could not see the Ford Taurus until just before impact.

– The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner concluded that the 3 occupants in the Des Moines Police unit died from multiple blunt force injuries. The cause of death for Beary was determined to be from multiple blunt force injuries, thermal injuries, and smoke inhalation.

– Toxicology reports indicated that Beary’s blood alcohol concentration at the time of the crash was 0.223%.    This report also showed the recent use of marijuana by Beary.

– Toxicology reports for the Des Moines officers were negative for alcohol and common illicit or prescription drugs.

– Based upon the investigation, the Iowa State Patrol’s Technical Investigator(s) concluded that Beary merged onto I-80 at the Grand Prairie Parkway interchange driving westbound into the eastbound lanes of travel.  This interchange is marked appropriately with signage and markings. The investigators concluded that Beary’s high level of impairment resulted in him driving the wrong way on the interstate.

On May 1, 2016, at about 1:26 a.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a serious crash on NW West Union Road near NW 203rd Pl. in the community of Rock Creek. A car was reported overturned in a field.

Sheriff’s Deputies and Firefighters from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue arrived and found the female passenger, 39-year-old Nicole Nelson of Hillsboro, pinned under the black 2002 BMW 325i. Firefighters used hydraulic tools to lift the car and get Ms. Nelson out.

The driver of the car, 38-year-old Cary Lovelady of Hillsboro, was already out of the car when deputies arrived. Lovelady and Nelson were both transported by ambulance to Emanuel Hospital. Lovelady had minor injuries and Nelson’s injuries were life threatening.

The Washington County Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Team was called to the scene to investigate the crash. Their preliminary investigation indicates that Lovelady was driving west on NW West Union Rd. and was entering a 40 MPH curve at a high rate of speed. He started to go off the road and then overcorrected his steering, losing control of the car and putting it into a roll. At this time, investigators believe that both alcohol and speed were factors in the crash. No other vehicles were involved and Lovelady’s license is currently suspended.

Lovelady may face felony DUII charges because of prior convictions for DUII and additional charges for injuries Nelson suffered in the crash. The investigation is continuing, no charges have been filed at this time.

The News-Press reports that Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Zachary Kureth, 24, intentionally hit the brakes on Interstate 75 “in an act of road rage,” triggering an April 19 crash that killed Robert Weinland, 79, of Sarasota. The crash, between the Daniels Parkway and Alico Road exits, also left Weinland’s 75-year-old passenger, Gisela Weinland, with serious injuries.

Kureth, who had been placed on probation 11 days before the fatal crash due to a DUI conviction, was booked into jail in Lee County on Saturday.

Troopers said Weinland was southbound on I-75 in his 2015 Chrysler Town & Country when he changed lanes in front of Kureth’s 2003 Dodge Caravan. Kureth then passed Weinland and changed back into Weinland’s lane.

Troopers said Kureth reduced his speed “to a stopped position,” forcing Weinland to do the same. A semi-truck behind Weinland couldn’t stop in time, rear-ending Weinland’s van and causing him to hit the right rear of another vehicle, investigators said. Weinland was pronounced dead at the scene. Kureth wasn’t hurt. MORE

Ernest Young III of Hughesville killed by repeat offender DUI driver Arthur Edelen

HUGHESVILLE, MD. — A repeat offender DUI driver who got easy treatment for his last DUI now faces new DUI charges along with possible vehicular homicide charges for the death of a Hughesville resident.  Typically, the Maryland State Police will consult with the Charles County States Attorney for charges to be brought pending receipt of blood alcohol tests on the part of the driver who failed to yield the right of way and caused the fatal crash.

Ernest Young III, who was operating his motorcycle southbound on Rt. 5 on March 24, 2016, was struck by a White Plains resident who pulled into his path causing a crash.  Young was taken to Prince Georges Shock Trauma where he died two days later from injuries received in the crash.  Maryland State Police reported alcohol impairment on the part of the driver who hit him, Arthur Edelen, is suspected. Court records show Edelen has a prior DUI conviction.

Maryland State Police reported that Young was driving his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle southbound on Rt. 5 near Roosevelt Place at 9:04 pm when Arthur Christopher Edelen, of 4745 Duffield Road in White Plains drove his Honda Odyssey into the path of the Young’s motorcycle whereupon the motorcycle slammed into the minivan.

The Maryland State Police Trooper Two Medevac helicopter flew Young to PG Trauma from the scene.

Maryland Court records show that Edelen was charged by the Maryland State Police on Nov. 22, 2009, with DUI while operating on Laurel Grove Road in a 1996 Lincoln. Appearing in St. Mary’s County District Court on March 25, 2010, Edelen was given a plea deal by St. Mary’s States Attorney Richard Fritz. The deal with a Probation Before Judgement, called for 30 days in jail with all 30 days suspended and a fine of $192.50.  Records show that the fine was not paid, and his license was suspended on June 25, 2016.

On July 25, 2012, Edelen was arrested for driving while suspended by St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Deputy Jean Vezzosi. In St. Mary’s County District Court on Oct. 10, 2012, St. Mary’s States Attorney Richard Fritz gave another Probation Before Judgement plea deal to Edelen with 10 days in jail and all 10 days suspended, along with a fine of $85.

Arrested for fourth-degree burglary by Charles County Sheriff’s Officer Dorrell Savoy on March 20, 2011, Edelen hired private attorney Cara Rockhill to arrange a plea deal with Charles County States Attorney Anthony Covington. The deal on July 27, 2011, resulted in the theft and burglary charges being placed on the Stet Docket with no time and no fine.

Charged with possession of drugs on Jan. 19, 2007 by Charles County Officer Joseph Piazza, Edelen entered a guilty plea in a deal with the Charles County States Attorney on June 12, 2007. The deal provided for 6 months in jail with all the time suspended and a fine of $150, along with two years of probation.

Young is survived by his devoted wife, Dr. Alesia Madden-Young; loving children, Lantrese and Ernest B. Young; mother, Polly Young; siblings, Gwendolyn Bell-McNeil, Sharon Walker, Ernestine Young and Anthony Bell; a host of other relatives and friends.
